Wendy’s Classic Chicken Sandwich review

Well, it took me a whole day from writing about this new chicken sandwich to having to go out and secure one. Sigh. I guess the fast food chains know us all too well right?

Here’s some pictures of the sandwich so you can get an idea what you can expect for your $4.99:

The first thing that caught my eye was the large chicken breast filet – none of that reformed cheapo stuff here. This chicken sandwich is definitely competing in the higher end of the fried sandwich market. The chicken breast was plenty juicy and very tasty. The chicken meat was also complemented well by a ‘just right’ crisp batter. Not too thick, not too thin, never overpowering the chicken itself.

The bun itself was a fairly non descriptive fast food bun, but the toppings were solid; a single slice of tomato, a lettuce leaf, mayo – and probably the standout item – the zesty pickles. These seems to be some debate as to whether these are actually sweet pickles, though I believe they are actually dill pikcles, just with less herbal notes.

For me the pickles here really brings the whole sandwich together, as the dude would say. The pickle had a nice sharp, almost briny snap, a great contrast to the grease of the fried chicken. I thought it really helped to lift and lighten the whole sandwich, preventing it sliding into fried stodgy mediocrity.

For me this sandwich is a definite must buy – but I know the use of the pickles is contentious; you can try one at your local Wendy’s now for $4.99.
